What you get

Six organizations, one service. Each one collects a different royalty stream, and each one needs your catalog registered separately. Here is exactly what each one is, in plain English, and what we do there.

Performance rights org

ASCAP

ASCAP collects public performance royalties for songwriters, composers, and publishers when your songs play on radio, TV, streaming, and live. It collects performance royalties only, not record sales. Writer membership is currently free, though ASCAP calls that waiver temporary.

What we do

We walk you through your own writer application, which ASCAP requires you to submit personally with a government ID and a live liveness check. Then we register every work and maintain your catalog as your Designated User, with separate credentials. No one else can submit that application for you, and we never try.

Performance rights org

BMI

BMI is the other major US performance rights organization, collecting performance royalties for songwriters, composers, and publishers. Writers can belong to only one US PRO at a time, so we help you pick the right home and screen for any existing affiliation before we start.

What we do

We guide you through your personal affiliation agreement, which the writer must sign themselves, and pre-fill everything we legally can. Then we register your catalog and keep it current as your authorized agent.

Invitation only

SESAC

SESAC is a for-profit performance rights organization that accepts affiliates by invitation only. It takes no unsolicited applications. We never promise SESAC affiliation, and no service can honestly sell it to you.

What we do

Already affiliated with SESAC? We register your works inside your existing account and screen co-writer affiliations so every split lands where it should.

Invitation only

GMR

Global Music Rights is an invitation-only performance rights organization with no public application process. Affiliation cannot be purchased or promised by any service.

What we do

Already affiliated with GMR? We handle work registration and catalog maintenance inside your existing account.

Not a PRO: recordings

SoundExchange

SoundExchange is not a PRO. It is a nonprofit that collects statutory royalties for sound recordings from non-interactive digital services like satellite radio and webcasters. Royalties split 50% to the sound recording owner, 45% to the featured artist, and 5% to a fund for non-featured artists. Registration is free.

What we do

We register your featured-artist and rights-owner accounts and claim your recordings, working under your signed Account Authorization Form. We never sign royalty-direction forms without the proper authorization.

Not a PRO: mechanicals

The MLC

The Mechanical Licensing Collective is not a PRO. Under the Music Modernization Act it collects digital audio mechanical royalties from streaming services and pays 100% of what it collects to members, with monthly matching and payouts. Membership is free.

What we do

We operate as an Administrator member of The MLC and bulk-register your catalog (up to 50 tracks under this service), then monitor matching so your mechanicals find you.

What is not included: any fees the PROs themselves charge, which you pay directly to them and which are subject to each PRO's current fee schedule. We also cannot apply to SESAC or GMR on your behalf: both are invitation-only, with no public application. The price covers up to 50 tracks; contact us for a custom quote on larger catalogs.

The guarantee

“Every work in your catalog registered at every organization you are eligible for, completed within 30 days of receiving all of your materials, or your money back.”

That is the whole promise. If we do not finish your registrations within 30 days of receiving everything we need from you, you get a full refund. The details are in the terms and conditions.

FAQ

Straight answers, based on how these organizations actually work.

Do I need a PRO if I only stream on Spotify?

Yes. Streams generate performance royalties that ASCAP or BMI collect, and mechanical royalties that The MLC collects. Your distributor only collects master-side royalties, so without PRO, SoundExchange, and MLC registration, real money goes unclaimed.

Can I belong to two PROs?

As a writer, no. Writers can belong to only one US PRO at a time under an exclusive grant, and switching requires a release from your current society. Publishers, on the other hand, may span multiple societies. We screen every client for existing affiliations before we start, because double affiliation can breach the exclusive grant.

What is the difference between a PRO, SoundExchange, and The MLC?

A PRO like ASCAP or BMI collects public performance royalties for compositions (the songs). SoundExchange collects statutory royalties for sound recordings from non-interactive digital services like satellite radio and webcasters. The MLC collects digital audio mechanical royalties from interactive streaming under the Music Modernization Act blanket license. Three different organizations, three different royalty streams, and you need all three registered.

Why do I have to apply to ASCAP or BMI myself?

ASCAP requires all new writer members to submit their own applications, verified with a government ID and a live biometric liveness check, specifically to prevent fraud. BMI's affiliation agreement must be signed by the writer personally. Any service that promises to create your ASCAP writer account for you is promising something ASCAP forbids. We guide you through a 10-minute flow, pre-fill everything we legally can, then operate as your Designated User afterward.

What do you need from me?

Four things: your complete catalog data with titles, co-writers, agreed splits, and publisher info; prompt completion of your personal PRO application; your signature on our authorization forms; and honest disclosure of any existing PRO affiliations and publishing deals. Everything starts the day we have all of it.

How long does it take?

Our guarantee is completion within 30 days of receiving all of your materials. For reference, ASCAP typically processes membership within 10 business days of receiving documents, and BMI affiliation finalizes in about 2 to 4 weeks.

Will I get royalties immediately?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Royalties lag behind performances: ASCAP takes about 7 to 8 months to process writer royalties (about 6 for publishers), and BMI takes 8 to 9 months after a quarter ends. Registration puts you in the system so royalties can find you. It does not guarantee royalties.

What if I am already with SESAC?

Then we register and maintain your works inside your existing account, and we screen co-writer affiliations. What we cannot do is get you invited: SESAC and GMR are invitation-only with no public application, so no service can honestly promise you affiliation.

Do you register my copyrights with the Copyright Office?

No. Copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is a separate process. This service covers royalty-organization registration only: PROs, SoundExchange, and The MLC.

How do writer and publisher splits work?

At ASCAP, writer interests must total 50% and publisher interests must total 50%. We register exactly the splits you provide, and we verify them with you before filing, because misreported splits can get royalties suspended.
